Construction Management Students to Test Out Skills on Formula 1 Paddock Building – News

A team of UA Little Rock seniors are competing in a unique competition that will test their skills in the fast lane.

As one of 10 teams competing in the Roofing Alliance’s 10th Anniversary Construction Management Student Competition, they will be completing a bid for the roof of the prestigious Formula 1 Paddock Building in Las Vegas.

This is the first time that a team of students from UA Little Rock are competing in the Roofing Alliance’s Construction Management Student Competition. The team includes senior construction management majors who are participating in their senior capstone class under Jim Carr, associate professor of construction management. The competing students include Caleb Coffman, Wesley Cook, Steven Currence, and Andrew Payton.

“This is a great competition for our graduating students to show off the great skills they’ve learned at UA Little Rock,” Carr said. “In addition to putting together a qualified schedule, bid, and safety plan, they will develop a presentation to deliver to the client to show that they are the best ones capable of completing this project.”

Teams research the chosen project, submit a qualified bid package proposal, and complete an oral presentation to illustrate their roofing, project management, estimating, and safety knowledge. After receiving project details, each team is assigned a roofing contractor mentor who will provide guidance while students craft their written proposal. David Workman, of RoofConnect in Sheridan, is serving as the UA Little Rock team mentor. Proposals are reviewed and scored by a panel of industry judges.

“This hallmark event exposes students to roofing as a career choice and provides a valuable opportunity to network and connect with fellow students, faculty, and Roofing Alliance members,” Roofing Alliance President Greg Bloom said. “Every roofing professional should plan to attend the student competition. This is the future, and we need to support them and this competition.”

Teams selected as finalists will be invited to attend the International Roofing Expo in Las Vegas in February 2024. Finalists will attend the Roofing Alliance’s Welcome Reception, tour the F1 Paddock Building, and attend NRCA’s Industry Awards Ceremony and Cocktail Reception where winning teams will be recognized on stage.
